Last Winter, Duck Had One Truly Dark Day. It Was Christmas.

The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau's winter restaurant sheet for December 2025 listed 31 places in Duck. Nineteen were marked open for the month. Eight were marked closed for the off-season. On Christmas Day, exactly one was open: the Lifesaving Station at The Sanderling.

With the Jazz Festival weekend of Oct. 10 and 11 now behind the town, that sheet is the best record of what comes next. Duck's winter closures follow a pattern. They hit a specific group of seasonal seafood houses, sweet shops and one resort dining room. The kitchens along the village stretch mostly keep cooking, with closed days scattered across individual calendars until the town shuts nearly all at once on December 25.

What Last December's Sheet Recorded

The Visitors Bureau spreadsheet tracks five things for each restaurant: whether it's open in December, then its status on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Here is how Duck's 31 entries sorted for December 2025.

December 2025 status Duck businesses
Open Aqua Restaurant & Spa, Bangkok Thai-Sushi, Cookshack, Cravings Steak & Seafood, Donutz on a Stick & Ice Cream, Duck's Cottage Coffee & Books, Duck Deli, Duck Donuts, Duck Pizza Co, Lifesaving Station, NC Coast Grill & Bar, The Paper Canoe, Pizzazz Pizza Company, Red Sky Cafe, Roadside Bar & Grill, Shane's Family Market, Sweet T's Coffee, Beer & Wine, Village Table and Tavern, Vine & Board
Open with a break Roadside Bar & Grill, closed Dec. 20–26; The Blue Point, closed Dec. 5–25
Closed for the off-season Dockside 'n Duck, Eventide, Fishbones Raw Bar & Restaurant, Hawaiian Island Snowballs, Holy Cow Creamery, Sunset Grille & Raw Bar, Theodosia, Tullio's Pastry Shop & Bakery
Call the restaurant Big Buck's Homemade Ice Cream, Coastal Cantina, Treehouse Coffee

Most of the closed group falls into two categories. Fishbones, Sunset Grille and Dockside 'n Duck are raw bars and seafood houses. Holy Cow Creamery and Hawaiian Island Snowballs sell summer treats. Theodosia, the dining room at The Sanderling, closed too, even though the resort's Lifesaving Station stayed open every day of the month. Fishbones' own site describes its schedule as "Open for lunch and dinner in-season," and that phrase covers most of the group.

The open list includes the places that line Duck Road from the Waterfront Shops north to The Sanderling. That's Duck's Cottage and The Blue Point at 1240 Duck Road, Red Sky at 1197, NC Coast at 1184, Aqua at 1174, Village Table & Tavern at 1314, the Lifesaving Station at 1461 and The Paper Canoe at 1564. Coffee, pizza, groceries and a sit-down dinner were all available in town through December.

This was last winter, and it's a snapshot. When the Outer Banks Voice pointed readers to the sheet in January 2026, it said the Bureau updates the list during the winter and that schedules can change. As of mid-October 2026, no 2026–27 version has been published, and the Bureau's winter page still links to the 2025 sheet.

The Changes Start as Shorter Weeks

Places that stay open through winter usually cut back on days first. Several Duck restaurants have already posted their shoulder-season schedules.

Aqua's website lists dinner nightly from 4 p.m. and the bar from 3 p.m., then adds a notice.

Starting OCT 21 Open WED-SUN for lunch & dinner

The notice doesn't give a year. It does show the usual shape of the change: fewer days a week and a lunch service added. Aqua was also marked open in December last year and on New Year's Eve.

The Sanderling's Theodosia page lists Wednesday–Saturday dinner for "Post Labor Day through mid-October," which is about now. The page gives no closing date, and Theodosia was marked closed last December.

Village Table & Tavern announces on its homepage that it is "now open Monday - Saturday!" and describes itself as serving Duck year-round. Eventide, at 1190 Duck Road, posts Tuesday–Saturday hours of 11:30 to 8 and is closed Sunday and Monday. That schedule is undated, and last December Eventide was on the closed list.

Keep the day of the week in mind. A Sunday or Monday in November is likelier to turn up a "closed today" sign than any particular week in the month.

Thanksgiving Week Is the Busiest Stretch of Fall

The town and The Sanderling have filled in their fall dates. Here is the confirmed 2026 calendar in order:

  1. Saturday, Oct. 17: Movies on the Green shows "A Nightmare Before Christmas" on the Town Green, 6:35–7:50 p.m.
  2. Thursday, Nov. 5: Spanish Coast Wine Dinner at the Lifesaving Station, 6 p.m.
  3. Thursday, Nov. 26, 9 a.m.: The Duck Turkey Trot 5K starts on Christopher Drive beside Scarborough Faire, according to the Outer Banks Voice.
  4. Thursday, Nov. 26, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.: Thanksgiving buffet at Red Sky Cafe.
  5. Thursday, Nov. 26, noon–7 p.m.: Four-course Thanksgiving lunch and dinner at the Lifesaving Station, $90 per adult and $42 for children 12 and under.
  6. Thursday, Dec. 10: Swiss Terroir Wine Dinner at the Lifesaving Station, 6 p.m.

The Turkey Trot starts beside Scarborough Faire, which is also home to Vine & Board at 1177 Duck Road, Suite 23. Red Sky's buffet starts an hour after the race and runs until 3 p.m. Most of what's on the Duck calendar for Thanksgiving Day fits inside one stretch of Duck Road between 9 a.m. and mid-afternoon.

The Lifesaving Station appears on this list more than any other place, and that matches last winter's sheet. The Sanderling's page for the restaurant says "Open Daily," with breakfast from 7 to 11:30 a.m., lunch from noon to 4:30 p.m. and dinner from 5 to 10 p.m., and it already lists holiday hours for 2026.

December 25 Is When Duck Actually Closes

Last year's sheet shows the town thinning out in steps through the holidays. Nineteen Duck places were marked open for December. Nine were marked open on Christmas Eve: Bangkok Thai-Sushi, Donutz on a Stick, Duck's Cottage, Duck Donuts, the Lifesaving Station, NC Coast, Red Sky, Sweet T's and Vine & Board. On Christmas Day, the Lifesaving Station was the only Duck entry marked open.

A few businesses close for longer stretches. The Blue Point was marked closed Dec. 5 through 25, then open again on New Year's Eve. Roadside Bar & Grill closed Dec. 20 through 26 and was open for both New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. New Year's Eve brought much of Duck back. Aqua, Cookshack, Duck Pizza Co, Pizzazz, Shane's Family Market, Village Table and Tavern and others that had closed for Christmas were marked open that night.

The Sanderling's holiday page, updated in early October, keeps the Lifesaving Station open for the 2026 holidays:

  • Christmas Eve, Dec. 24: dinner 5–9 p.m., $90 per adult, $35 for children 12 and under
  • Christmas Day, Dec. 25: dinner 4–9 p.m., $85 per adult, $35 for children 12 and under
  • New Year's Eve, Dec. 31: dinner 5–9 p.m., $145 per adult, $85 for children 12 and under

For many households, groceries matter more than a reservation that week. Shane's Family Market was marked open in December, closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, open New Year's Eve and closed New Year's Day. If that holds this year, the last easy in-town shopping day before Christmas is December 23.

What Hasn't Been Announced Yet

Two December dates are still unannounced. The Town of Duck hasn't posted a date for the 2026 Yuletide celebration, and its calendar pages for November and December 2026 don't list a tree lighting. Last year's event, the 15th annual, was held at Duck Town Park on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025, from 3 to 5 p.m., with holiday music, a tree lighting, Santa and treats from Duck's Cottage. The Visitors Bureau's winter sheet is also still last year's version. When it's updated, it should show whether the 2026 pattern matches 2025.

Duck's Cottage is worth knowing for the holidays either way. Last year it was marked open on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, which makes it one of the most reliable morning stops in town that week.

Jackson Dixon has called the Outer Banks home since 1988 and works from Duck year-round. If you're thinking about what owning here looks like in the months after the season ends, she's glad to talk it through.
